My sincere condolences to the family of Kathy Hamblen. She was a great history teacher and quiz team advisor. We had many memorable trips to Watertown to compete on the radio with the Quiz Team. Kathy always made it fun and competitive. I remember the convertible rides and the stops for a treat at Ann's Stand. This was in the mid 1960's.
I also remember one time when she was showing me how to get a horse to take the proper leads when cantering; she intentionally had him take the wrong lead which resulted in his falling. She just jumped off!! The horse was fine and I was very impressed!
Kathy was truly an inspiration to all of her students and to her female students in particular. I respected her as a teacher and as a fellow equestrian. May she gallop through the heavens, jumping the clouds, and racing with the wind.

My deepest sympathy to the family of Kathy Hamblen. She will always be Mrs. Hamblen to me. She was a very special person and an outstanding teacher. I have wonderful memories of her social studies and history classes at SJC High School. She made learning exciting and she encouraged us to think for ourselves and to continue life-long learning. I remember her laughter, the Quiz Team nights, and her encouragement of young women like me on the brink of college and career. With her as one of my role models, I attended graduate school and medical school so now I am a practicing pathologist in a hospital in the San Francisco Bay area. I will always be grateful to Mrs. Hamblen for her guidance and inspirational life. Even in sadness, I hope your memories of her will bring you comfort and peace.

Dear Hamblen Family, My sincere condolences on the loss of Kathy. She was my Junior and Senior year social studies teacher, as well as my Quiz Team Coach. I was on the last of five teams SJCS sent WATN in my Senior Year 1969-70. We had great times preparing for each show. Our team ended up battling the first team from SJCS and we won! She was always so much fun. Some of us had a very bad experience with personal typing the period before we had Senior Social Studies, Kathy used to say it took us 10 minutes out of her class time for recover from the typing. It is because of her I learned to love government and she is probably why I chose my career in government in Washington, DC. which I have just stopped. I just wanted you to know she touched lots of people in my years at SJCS and she is fondly remembered and now missed by us all. Bob Whiteman

I am so sorry for your loss--for the loss of this community legend and hero--longsuffering and long-serving teacher and encourager. Mrs. Hamblen taught me AP American history and American government, as well as an advanced course from SU. I was deeply grateful for her encouragement and care for me as a student, but beyond. She cared so much for us and worked so hard. I am in Chicago, and won't be able to make the calling hours, but I wanted to tell you that she meant a great deal to me as a teacher, and I wish you the comfort of Christ in this time of remembering and celebrating her life.

My sincere condolences to the Family Of Kathy Hamblen. She will be missed by many. Kathy was my high school teacher and she was the Class Adviser to my Adams Center Adams Graduating class of 1964 and she helped all of us to enter the world. I am so glad that she was able to attend our class reunion in 2014. It meant a lot to me to be able to talk with her at that reunion.

I first knew of Kathy Hamblen when I was a child, and she would come over to shop at my parent's tack store for her horses. Later, in 1975, she was my American History teacher. We had to do the dreaded term paper, and she assigned me the topic of the race riots of the 1960s. It was then that I began to understand just a little about the race relations in this country. I'll never forget her encouragement as I began to dig into what was going on in our major cities. Later, as I was in graduate school and planning a teaching career of my own, I called her and asked if I could observe her for a day. After my visit, she asked if I could get the college to allow her to be my master teacher. I asked and they agreed. Kathy was my mentor, and she knew exactly what to do to prepare me for my own classes. Like a parent throwing a child in the water to learn how to swim, I started out my first day by teaching all her classes. It was the best lesson in teaching I could have received. Later, she encouraged me to apply for my own teaching position at South Jeff. I did so, and soon was I was a colleague of Kathy's. She played a major role in my life. I send my condolences to her children and their families. Kathy was a positive role model for so many, and she will be missed.

Dear Kathy's Family, Kathy was my favorite teacher of all time. I graduated from SJCS in 1970 and had her for 11th and 12th grade social studies. Her teaching style - allowing students to construct their learning rather than just lecturing "at us." We not only learned history but also philosophy. We debated and did skits and plays. I fondly remember Bill Denison playing "God" from behind the curtain on the auditorium stage while several of us played the role of different philosophers. She was also our Quiz Team coach and drove us to Watertown in all kinds of weather to stand in front of cranky Harry Righter and recite our math or geography facts or discuss current events. We often convinced her to take us to Howard Johnson's after our meets. When I graduated she gave me a tiny pair of Native American moccasins telling me to always take the interesting and challenging path in life. Thank you Kathy - we all loved you.
