Obituary of John P Gregory

COPENHAGEN, N.Y.  —  John P. Gregory III, 44, died Friday morning, Jan. 10, 2014 at his home. The funeral service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 14, at Piddock Funeral Home, Adams, with Rev. Gene Hagelin officiating. Calling hours will be 1 to 3 and 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 13, at the funeral home. Born Feb. 6, 1969, in Watertown, son of John P. II and Dona Prouty Gregory, he graduated from General Brown High School in 1987 and attended Jefferson Community College, Watertown. He was a New York State Correctional Officer at Sing Sing, Greenhaven and Cape Vincent before going to work in 1991 at the Jefferson County Sheriffs Department in the corrections division.  John was promoted to sergeant in 1998. He was a defensive tactics and other required courses instructor. He married Linda Patterson on June 16, 1990, in the Asbury United Methodist Church, Watertown. The couple lived in Watertown for several years before moving to their present home in 2000. Surviving are his wife, Linda; a son, Christopher Patterson; a daughter, Caitlin Gregory, both of Copenhagen; his father and step mother, John P. II and Vicki, Sandy Creek; his mother, Dona Prouty and companion Harold Meagher, Dexter; father-in-law and mother-in-law, James and Sally Patterson, Copenhagen; maternal grandmother, Beverly Prouty, Watertown; a sister, Shannon Gregory, Watertown;  a step brother, William Fairchild II and wife Becky, Adams; three brothers-in-law, three sisters-in-law, several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his paternal grandparents Jack and Jean Gregory and his maternal grandfather, Donald Prouty. He was an active outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, boating, four wheeling. He enjoyed playing poker with his friends and helping family and friend with various construction projects and fixing their cars. He was a life member of the Marine Corps League, Lowville, Sons of American Legion, Dexter, and Council 82, AFL/CIO. The family has requested in lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Marine Corps League, Lowville.
