Obituary of Sue L. Herse

Sue Lyman Herse, 90, of Route 11, Adams Center, died Thursday November 9, 2023 at Samaritan Medical Center, Watertown, NY. Funeral mass will be held at 1:00pm Tuesday November 14 at Saint Cecilia’s Church, Adams, with Rev. Robert Decker officiating.  Burial will immediately follow in the Saint Cecilia’s Cemetery, Roberts Corners.  A celebration of Sue’s life will be held at the Adams Country Club, US Route 11, beginning at 3:30pm.  Arrangements are with the Piddock Funeral Home Inc, Adams, NY. Born February 24, 1933 in Adams, daughter of Gordon and Bernadette (Kelly) Lyman, she graduated from Adams High School.  In 1969 she graduated from Oswego State  with a Bachelor’s degree in History and later earned her Master’s degree 1973. She taught at South Jefferson Central School for twenty seven years as a junior high social studies teacher.  She married John C. Herse on January 2, 1952 at Saint Cecilia’s Church in Adams, NY.  The couple lived all their married life in Adams Center. John, a well known meat cutter, died December 29, 2007. Surviving are five children, Mary Lou Edmonds Ferry (John), Belleville; Kirk Herse (Patricia), Lowville; Janie Schaumburg (Mark), Adams Center; Lou Anne Parish, Lorraine; Teresa Tyldesley (Todd), Mexico; grandchildren Brent, Tyldesley, Brandon Tyldesley, Brooke Marcellus, Nathaniel Parish, Ryan Edmonds, Amber Bibbins, Brittney Herse, Chelsea Doyle, Mara Sears and Kala Maguire; thirteen great grandchildren; nephew Fred Herse Jr (Jean) and sister in law Rita Herse. Sue is predeceased by her husband John, her parents Gordon and Bernadette Lyman, a daughter Colleen Herse, sisters Helen and Beverly, brother in law Fred Herse, son in law Marty Edmonds, Pat Bates and a nephew Larry Herse. For those that knew her, she was a “ball of energy”. She was an avid swimmer and gardener and she enjoyed lawn work.  She was a mentor for teachers at South Jefferson Central School, played the piano and every year she painted large window scenes for Christmas at their home.  She loved saying the rosary and loved to delegate. Sue was the Town of Adams Historian for 22 years, she chaired and was secretary for NYSUT, she was a director of Pioneer Days for school children and teaching them how to make candles, soap and churn butter.   She was part of the Retired Teachers Association, Adams Beautification, Etude Club, Arbor Day Board, Adams Historical Association, member of Saint Cecilia’s Church, the church choir and volunteered at the church. Sue had a huge impact on so many lives - her family, all of the students she taught, and everyone in the community.
